Microstock earnings report - February 2010

The biggest painful incident in February was closing of one of the best microstock sites – Stockxpert. It has quite a big impact on my microstock earnings. Most of the buyers from Stockxpert were moved to iStockphoto, so maybe that's the reason why I had the BME (Best Month Ever) on iStock.

Microstock earnings report - January 2010

First month of the year is over and my microstock earnings report is here again. The slump after Christmas season was not so big as I expected. Even better – the numbers are much higher than previous year – check the last graph in my article.

Microstock earnings report - December 2009 + 2008 / 2009 comparison

The year 2009 is over and it is time to put here some information about the earnings in December and also compare the whole year 2009 earnings with the previous year.

Although December is every year weaker month than November, I reached Best Month Ever on three agencies – Fotolia, Stockxpert and iStockphoto, so it was good month for me.

Microstock earnings report - November 2009

Well I did it again! November was again my Best Month Ever (BME) in microstock industry. The earnings were so good, that I had BME on every microstock agency, where I'm submitting my images.

The best improvement was on Fotolia – check the graph – the earnings are 4× bigger than they were in summer.

How to reduce EPS file size

Sometimes it happens to everyone – you create a really cool vector illustration and want it to submit and sell on microstock, but you found, that the exported EPS file is too big. What can you do, to make the EPS file smaller? Here you will find several tips and tricks for reducing the EPS file size.

Microstock earnings report - October 2009

Exactly as I predicted, October was again Best Month Ever (BME) for me in microstock! The earnings were so good, that I'm not sure if the next month will be better again (November was the best month every year – look at the history graphs in my report). I had the BME on Shutterstock, Dreamstime, Stockxpert, Fotolia and 123RF!

What is the best vector image size for selling in microstock?

Few months ago I wrote an article about preparing vector illustration for sale in microstock and there I wrote, that 16 Megapixels should be the ideal size for the JPG preview. But now I made a small research and found, that 16 Megapixels is not enough!

Microstock earnings report - September 2009

September was the Best Month Ever (BME) for me in microstock. And I'm awaiting that another BME will be in October and also in November, because in those months are the microstock earnings the highest for every year (you can check it on my last graph in the article). I had also the BME on Shutterstock and Dreamstime.

Microstock earnings report - August 2009

August was quite a weak month – my sales drops to the March level. And it looks like August was weak month also in previous two years (in 2008 it was because my account on Shutterstock was disabled for several days). The sales went down on all my accounts, except Fotolia.

Microstock earnings report - July 2009

In July, there was not any surprise in the overall earnings for me – July 2009 was just a little bit worse than June – it is very similar as in the previous years in microstock – check the last graph in the report, where you can compare the earnings since 2007. Only on iStockphoto I had the BME (without any extended licence) – last image was added to my iStock portfolio in May!

iSyndica - easy multiple upload on several microstock sites

Did you ever think about how much time you spend just by uploading your images to several microstock sites? I did and after that I decided, that I need some system, which will save me some time. The iSyndica service is one of the solutions – once you have account on this service, you will upload your files just to this one website (the upload there is quite quick) and after that you can easily distribute your images to all microstock agencies, where you are selling.

Microstock earnings report - June 2009

Well, June 2009 was my best month ever on microstock! To this article I also added one „history“ graph, showing my earnings for nearly three years in microstock. You can see, that the earnings are bigger and bigger – that's because I'm not lazy and my portfolio is growing.

Microstock earnings report - May 2009

In the middle of the May I made a decision, that I will post my microstock earnings here on my blog. Actually I don't want to post here my my earnings in dollars (I don't want to boast about my earnings), but I want to show the trends – if the earnings are going up or down (I'm quite stable in submitting). The graphs also show you, what are the best microstock sites for selling images – that's the reason, why there are 2 graphs – one showing the money and another showing number of submitted images.

How to prepare vector illustration for microstock sale

On most microstock sites accepts vector illustrations in EPS format (in version Illustrator 8) with generated JPG preview of the illustration. Some of them wants it in ZIP, some need just small preview and others big. In this article I will show you the best and easiest way, how to prepare the illustration in desired EPS format and how to generate JPG preview.

Fotolia accepts vectors in EPS and AI formats now

In the past, Fotolia accepted vector illustrations only in SVG format (most of the other microstock agencies require EPS format – version Illustrator 8). But now you can sell your vectors in EPS or AI formats (version Illustrator 10, but 8 should be good enough too), that is a big improvement! The pricing system is also changed – the price depends on the complexity of the artwork.

What to draw and photograph during the year

Every microstock contributor knows, that some themes are selling much better in some months of the year – and those are seasonal themes, like Christmas, Easter, Halloween… You should start selling those several months before – for example with Christmas themes you should start already in August (November is too late – most of the designers works on Christmas cards already in summer / autumn and they need fresh photos).
